Rectiphy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1) Q&A - Functions
ActiveImage Protector Server / ActiveImage Protector for Hyper-V / Desktop / IT Pro
How is AIP different than other backup solutions?
ActiveImage Protector has several unique features:
Does ActiveImage Protector (AIP) support restoring to a new HDD of a different size; for example, from an existing 160GB HDD to a new 320GB or vice versa?
AIP supports restoring to a new HDD in the same size as the original or in expanded size, though, not to a reduced size.
Does AIP supports backup from and restore to SSD (Solid State Drives)?
Yes.
Does AIP backup the hidden volume (recovery partition service area)?
Yes.
Can AIP be used for migrating a physical machine to a virtual machine?
AIP is an ideal solution for performing a P2V (physical-to-virtual or P2V) migration and can quickly assist in moving servers from a physical state to a virtual machine.
Can AIP take incremental backups without creating a schedule?
No. AIP’s useful Schedule Wizard lets you set up when to take incremental backups.
What is “Verify Image” function for?
This function is designed for verifying the consistency of a backup image.
What is ActiveImage Protector IT Pro?
ActiveImage Protector IT Pro edition is designed for IT professionals such as value added resellers (VARs), systems integrators and resellers of computer solutions. AIP IT Pro edition lets you back up the hard drive of one system from the product CD and restore it onto a new or different system. This solution is ideal for P2V (physical-to-virtual) migrations. While it does not do scheduled backups – it can back up and restore drives for an unlimited number of customers or systems from one CD as long as they are done one at a time.
2) Q&A - Environment
ActiveImage Protector Server / ActiveImage Protector for Hyper-V / Desktop / IT Pro
Can AIP backup / restore on HBA (Host Bus Adapter for Fiber Channel SAN Boot)?
Because multi-path drivers are not installed in recovery environments, redundant disks are recognized respectively. To backup / restore in a recovery environment a single-path configuration must be provided by temporarily removing one of the HBA cables.
Does AIP backup / restore under iSCSI environments?
Hot backup / hot restoring is supported for the volumes which are recognized as data drives by Disk Management in the OS through the use of the iSCSI initiator. Since iSCSI volumes are not recognized in a recovery environment, hot backup of volumes which have to be restored in a recovery environment (ex. system volume, etc.) requires copying of files and folders in the image file by using AIP’s [Mount Backup Image] function.
Can AIP be used with a disk defragmentation utility?
In case of combined use of disk defragmentation utility and ActiveImage Protector, immediately after defragmentation (optimization) processing, it is recommended to take a full (base) backup. Data movement as a result of the defragmentation processing may cause an increase in the size of the incremental image file.
Does ActiveImage Protector back up Linux systems?
Contact your Rectiphy representative for information on how to back up Linux machines in a standard network or virtual environment.
ActiveImage Protector - Virtualization Edition / Hyper-V
How does ActiveImage Protector for Hyper-V differ from the Virtual Edition?
ActiveImage Protector for Hyper-V is optimized for Microsoft Server 2008 Hyper-V environments. The most significant feature difference is that with AIP for Hyper-V you can use Rectiphy’s patent pending ReZoom technology in order to restore just one Guest (or several or all). This ability is not available in other solutions which require you to restore all VM’s even if just one is needed.
Does AIP for Hyper-V support VSS?
AIP supports Hyper-V host / guests hot backup on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V host. On virtual machines where Microsoft Exchange Server or SQL Server supporting VSS Writer is set up, a snapshot of the OS on the virtual machines is taken while maintaining the consistency of the data on Microsoft Exchange Server or SQL Server through the use of the VSS Writer.
Even if the guest OS does not support Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (Windows 2000 or Linux), or if the OS supports VSS-aware snapshots, but exclusively used by third party backup software on the guest OS, the guest OS will be automatically placed in a paused state from the moment hot backup starts on the Hyper-V host to the moment snapshot processing completes. When snapshot processing completes, the guest OS is automatically released from paused state and is placed back into the same state as immediately before entering paused state.
How many disks and volumes per disk does AIP support?
AIP supports up to the maximum number of 31 disks per system.
Also, AIP supports up to the maximum number of 24 volumes per disk.
